Cancelled Flight

Delta Cancelled Our Original Flight!

We arrived at O’Hare Airport in Chicago on Thursday, February 17 only to discover that the first leg of our trip to Capetown, South Africa had been cancelled. A few hours later we had a new itinerary that took us to Detroit, through Amsterdam and Johannesburg and on Capetown. We arrived 8 hours later than we had planned and ended up with a 4×4 Nissan pickup truck instead of a compact car, but it could have been worse (no car!).

Somehow, our flight from Amsterdam to Johannesburg had been upgraded to “business class” which we thoroughly enjoyed! The hardest part of the trip was spending Friday night in Johannesburg airport at a 24-hour Max & Beans coffee shop. But, we made it through, and after a good night of sleep on Saturday night, feel rested and ready to explore Capetown!

Our greatest joy was walking out from picking up our baggage in the Capetown airport and being greeted by our only daughter Kathryn, who has been in SA since October, 2010. It’s been great to be with her and have her take us to places she has explored, and to meet her friends.

The weather has been incredible… sunny and in the 80′s with a nice breeze from the ocean. I can see and hear the ocean from where I am sitting in the Sir David Boutique Guesthouse. This is especially nice since we left freezing weather in Chicago with a couple feet of snow still on the ground from the blizzard of 2011.

I have so far been able to navigate the SA roads driving on the wrong side, with the steering wheel on the right side, and the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals arranged left to right like the US, but with the manual shifter being on my left, but the shift patterns like the US. It does get confusing at times, but somehow I’ve been able to allow my brain make the adjustments.

Galena Getaway!

Back in the years when I was a full-time freelance illustrator, a friend of mine named Dwight Nelson (a product packaging design manager for Quaker) referred me to Connie Koralik, who became my artist rep and a friend.

Some years ago, Connie and her husband, photographer Robert Keeling, moved to the beautiful Galena Territory area of Northwest Illinois, and purchased a piece of property which they have turned it into a fabulous vacation rental property, available to appropriate couples, families, etc. It’s a perfect distance from Chicago, and gets you into an area unlike most of Illinois, with rolling hills, wooded farms, open fields, and wildlife.

I highly recommend that you consider this location and property for a weekend getaway, or an extended vacation. Check out the “Galena Louise” website at http://www.galenalouise.com for info on rates, reservations, amenities, etc. Then give Connie a call and tell her that Randy sent you!

Rodeo Experience

Young Lady Carrying Flag on HorsebackMy family and I went to a real rodeo while we were in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in mid-August. We watched bucking broncos, bull riding, barrel racing, rodeo clowns and a number of other events in a family-friendly atmosphere. It was delayed a bit due to a rain shower passing through!

One the most memorable things about this event was how they started it. Think about how often at events like football and baseball games, you will hear the announcer telling the crown to stand, remove hats to show honor and respect for the American flag.

Rodeo RiderThis was completely unnecessary here! A young woman on horseback started to ride into the arena with an American flag. Everyone stood immediately. Men removed hats, hands went to hearts, conversations stopped, children quieted down. Silence reigned as the flag was slowly circled in the arena, and came to a stop in from of the grandstand. The announcer commented on how he had not needed to tell us what to do! He made some heart felt comments about our nation, and the men and women serving in the armed forces. We sang the national anthem together. The young woman on horseback then took that flag around the arena at a very fast pace – it was a very inspiring and heart warming sight! We cheered and made a lot of noise!

I will never forget that moment and the feeling of pride I had, to be an American. I was also so thankful that this spontaneous display of national unity and pride is still reflective of most of America, outside of the Peoples Republic of Oak Park, Illinois!

Shooting Guns

Deb pointing a gun at instructorOne of the tensest moments during our recent family vacation trip to Colorado, occurred while we were out shooting clay pigeons at a local ranch. My wife just went postal on our instructor! As you can see during this very tense moment, I had to use all my “peacemaking” skills to diffuse the very tense situation.

Just kidding!
