Did your dad paint churches?? I have a watercolor of our church circa 1964 showing how it would look once built and it is signed "Birkey." Just curious. Thanks!

Dave, I can attest to his prayers for you over the years when you especially needed them. Even now, he probably keeps reminding God to keep his eye on you! I know he would be pleased with your present ministry of leading great Bible studies for those who know nothing about something important called hermeneutics!

It is hard to put into words what your dad meant to me. Del was not just a dear friend. He was a true pastor and mentor to me.

There was a season in my life when, even though I'd been a Christian and a pastor myself, I walked away from God. Del saw the early signs of my backsliding, even before I realized it was happening. He came to me and tried to stop it, confessing to me even his own worst failures in life and begging me to learn from his mistakes as he had. But I was too proud to listen.

When my rebellion became a fact, Del did not stop praying for me and pursuing me. As a gentle, understanding, but persistent friend he challenged me and loved me--even inviting me to your family's gatherings, where I would be surrounded by love.

I think often about those days, how he and your mom opened their home and even gave me a place to stay awhile.

As I made my way back to faith, after years of darkness, Del was there in tears cheering me on and counseling me.

So many great things can be said about your dad. He was a scholar and thinker, an author and reformer. But what he was to me was one of a kind. A true shepherd and friend.

Granted, I know there was also a quirkiness about him that made him sometimes seem stubborn or even pushy. But I have come to see that side of him as a small price to pay for his tenacity in love, his passion for truth, and his zeal to see me and those he loved as right with God.

And he is much of the reason I am right with God today. So thanks be to God that it worked!

Thanks for posting those great pictures. I too miss him. I also miss his voice. Thankfully, he is one of those who " by faith though dead still speaks" (Heb 4:4).

Thank you for keeping his memory alive.

Randy,

I have become a wordpress fan lately. I have my own domain on another ISP thinking of running a webpage, blog and e-mail through them. Ultimatley, I found the free blogging tools of wordpress to be much more useful than the tools I was paying for elsewhere.

I now have two blogs running on wordpress

http://plimtuna.wordpress.com About my Bible reading
http://inforiskplim.wordpress.com about Information Risk Management topics.

I can stand wholeheartedly behind your praise of their tooling.

Derek, thanks for the link to the Driscoll review of the book. I'd have to say that I disagree with Mark's view, but I understand where he's coming from. Mark is a complementarian and has less problems with hierarchy and patriarchy which makes his acceptance "institutional" systems easier. Even though the complementarian view is the most popular view among evangelicals today, there is a strong minority within its fold who honestly disagree. I am one of those egalitarian leaning evangelicals, who has a problem with hierarchy, patriarchy and institutionalism within the church. We don't think this is what Jesus taught or modeled or called his church to be. It is not hard to see that Viola and Barna also tend toward the egalitarian view and thus see the history of the churches development through that grid or "worldview"... as do I. I respect Mark Driscoll on many things... but I just can't agree on this one.

For those who might be interested, Mark Driscoll has written a detailed review and response to "Pagan Christianity". He describes where he finds agreement and where he would challenge some of the ideas put forth by Frank Viola.

Dan Proft was the MAIN reason I went to vote on Tuesday. I'm so sorry he didn't get a higher percentage... but I would absolutely vote for him again.

I'll have no coice but to vote for Mark Kirk. I do hope that Mr. Proft will remain in politics. He has so much to offer. One doesn't have to disect his words. He speaks common sense and offers honesty and integrity.
