Alpha

Alpha LogoYesterday, I had my first introduction to the “Alpha” course. Alpha is a process by which people can explore the meaning of life, and ask any question in a relevant, respectful, and relational manner. We have heard about it for years through our friends in South Africa – Skip and Sheila Collins.

We were recently introduced to Alpha through our young friends Nate and Mary Kurz, as they returned from a year of church ministry in England. They had been a part of the Alpha course in the church where they were serving. They spoke very highly of it, and had a desire to use it here in the US. So, we decided to go to the orientation event held yesterday in Naperville, to check it out for ourselves. Nate and Mary were there, along with Valery and Ruth Dodgson.

I learned that Alpha was developed by a church in London, England called Holy Trinity Brompton, and the vicar there named Nicky Gumbel. Today, over 10 million people in 163 countries have been through the Alpha course. Here is a link to the UK website, and here is the USA website.

I am intrigued with what I heard and saw yesterday and am seriously considering hosting this course in some way in the near future.

The Innocent Man

I am finishing up a book by John Grisham called “The Innocent Man.” I saw it on sale at Costco and thought it would be another great legal thriller like his other books. However, I discovered that unusually for John, this book is not fiction. It is actually the telling of a true story about Ron Williamson, a baseball hero from Ada, Oklahoma who was falsely accused, arrested, tried and put in prison on death row, for a murder and rape he never committed.

In the end he is set free through an incredible chain of events, but left mentally unstable and a physical wreck. It is a chilling, riveting story that you find hard to believe could happen in the USA. But, sadly it did. The murder/rape has never been solved. Recommended reading!

Valencia Americano Blog

My third son Marshall left yesterday for Valencia, Spain, where he will spend his next semester of college studying the Spanish language, history and culture. I am happy to report that he arrived there safe and sound today! Apparently he is staying near the lower right hand corner of this photo of the Valencia soccer stadium! Marshall has started a blog to chronicle his adventures in Spain, which can be accessed here: http://valenciamericano.blogspot.com

His mom, sister and I plan to visit him there during Spring Break in March.

Marshall is a Junior at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, with a double major in Business/Economics and Spanish.
